Experience Summary
I have been a professor of Anatomy & Physiology (A&P) for about three years. During this time I have taught at four different SUNY (State University of New York) institutions: SUNY - Rockland Community College (CC), SUNY - Westchester CC, SUNY - Onondaga CC and SUNY - Upstate Medical University. At SUNY - Upstate I teach A&P for the Physician Assistant program. I am currently a third year medical student in Staten Island. Before teaching at the college level, I also taught the MCAT for Kaplan while studying for my Masters degree in 2005. Teaching Style
I understand A&P is a very frustrating topic at first. However, what I like to show everyone is we already come in with a great understanding of familiarity of this topic, since we live it every day. What I try to do for the topics that seem very complex is break them down into easy to understand points. For example, I discuss how blood flowing through the vessels is like water flowing through a garden hose. The water pressure is similar to blood pressure, etc. I always do my best to organize material in a thorough manner and adapt to the learning pace of the student. Additionally, despite teaching over 1,000 students in this three year span, I still learn how to teach better with the more students I work with. Lastly, I use many videos, animations, analogies, mnumonics, medical terminology and different techniques to help students learn better. They do not just memorize, they understand.
