Experience Summary
I am a retired classroom teacher with over 35 years of experience. I have taught in all grades in elementary school as well as college classes online and on campus. My area of expertise is reading. During most of my years of teaching, I worked in a "self-contained" classroom setting so I was responsible for teaching all subject areas in the grade level. I love all children but find I really connect with the younger learners.
Teaching Style
I enjoy children, especially young children and I believe that everyone can learn. I know that one-on-one hands-on teaching is the best and that is the approach that I take when tutoring. Some skills must be memorized but cognitive recall is important. I believe in using whichever learning style works best for the child. For most children, hands-on is the best. I do have patience when working with a child but expect him/her to do his/her best and be serious about learning.
My Hobbies
My hobbies include reading for pleasure, travel, cooking, antiques and activities with my family and friends.
Other Comments
I can be available for homework help, just reviewing skills or helping to keep a child on grade level. Learning how to study and learn is important and I will work to develop those skills in any child with whom I work. Reading is the key to success in all subjects and should be the focus of early learners.
