Experience Summary
I first began tutoring at a middle school when I was earning my bachelors degree at San Diego State University in the mid 90s. I enjoyed it so much that I decided to pursue a career in education. After spending a year or so as a long-term substitute, I ventured into computer graphics for quite a few years. Eventually, I came back to the classroom to teach ESL to adults as well as Sixth Grade Math and Science. I just completed my Masters Degree in Educational Technology and I am currently authoring a book. Therefore, I'm looking to get back to tutoring again.
Teaching Style
All students have a variance in their learning style but I have found a cognitive apprenticeship/constructivist approach is a good style to start with. I show the student how to accomplish a task, then we accomplish a similar task together, and finally, the student shows me how to accomplish the task, with my guidance if necessary. This way, I really learn how the student thinks and comprehends information. All students need extra help sometimes. I happen to be a guy who loves to provide that help.
