Experience Summary
My teaching and tutoring experience has been richly varied. The small private schools I taught in needed all subjects taught (except foreign languages.) I’ve also worked in a Huntington Learning Center and homeschooled our children, covering grades K-12. My college major was health education, but I have taught and tutored phonics, reading, study skills, SAT prep, elementary and middle school math and language arts, geography, geometry, algebra I, and home economics. Add to that, I’ve had my own small private tutoring business until I moved to another state.
Teaching Style
Meeting the student where they are at academically and striving to help them succeed in school is my teaching style. That might require stacking up 100 pennies to teach about percentages; drawing pictures or graphs to teach how to do words problems in math; or making up short stories using the phonics and reading skills I’m trying to teach. Asking the student to explain to me what they are doing and why helps the student to “own” their work and see the need to understand what they are doing, rather than just filling in some blanks. So, basically, I try to find the student’s weak areas and help them build those up for understanding and academic success.
