Experience Summary
As a graduate from the University of Hawaii with a BA in Economics I have a solid understanding of mathematical concepts from the courses I have taken while pursuing my degree. I speak both English and Japanese fluently. I also have extensive grammatical skills from writing essays and writing projects. During the latter half of my college career I worked as math tutor. Before I got into it as a way to bring in a little income, I would help my friends out for free when I had time off from my own studies. For me it is a very rewarding position because of the appreciation my clients showed for my help and the great relationships I built with them. I also got a lot of great food!
Teaching Style
When I meet with a new client I create a plan by finding out where they are having trouble with starting with the basics. I make sure each client is prepared with all the basic tools to succeed before moving on to a new section. It is important to have to basics mastered to avoid having problems in the future. I like to teach by example. I do this by creating a problem, showing the steps, and then changing the numbers or variables. This way the the student can remember the process rather than just the answer. I always give positive reinforcement for their hard work. I believe creating challenges and praising clients for their accomplishments helps them retain the material.
