Experience Summary
I have a son who was born with neurofibromatosis is accompanied by a learning disability. My son is now 18 and in his last year of High School. He has been in special education courses since 2nd grade once being diagnosed with his learning challenges. He has had an active IEP since that time and I have worked very closedly with him throughout his school years. I have worked with him on every subject, every project, and encouraged him along the way. Due to his learning and physical disabilities, he has very low self esteem and this causes him to rebel during most homework sessions. It has been a true challenge, but very rewarding when I see him succeed, passing a test, knowing new words, etc..
Teaching Style
My son, as I stated earlier can be rebellious, so I have to be very patient with him and always stay positive. I constantly tell him how smart he is, how well he is doing, and I always point out his accomplishments and tell him where more work is needed. This style to me is important when working with any child, positive reinforcement and contant encouragement is needed.
