Experience Summary
Some years ago a friend told me that volunteer help was really needed for the adult GED program in our local area. I decided to give up time for two hours a week. When I begin the program it was really sad to see someone struggling over simple arithmetic problems, I was glad to help then. I also get a feeling of accomplishment when students show understanding and that understanding is reflected by an increase in homework scores and test scores.
I have earned two bachelor degrees, BA in Organic Chemistry and BA in Electronics. I have tutored students in mathematics, chemistry, electronics, basic computer programming and physics.
Teaching Style
I believe that if I can understand something, then everyone else can. I help students by convincing them that they can understand to build up confidence. Students and I work at what needs to be memorized such as formulas and basic concepts, learning to apply and work with these basics step by step, and at the same time, as I watch, strengthening weak areas. I often times use diagrams as needed and supply additional material.
