Experience Summary
As a college graduate with a degree in Journalsim, I spent many years writing for both print and news radio. I have excellent writing and grammar skills. I have taught Business Writing courses to groups of employees from many nationalities who need to understand the English grammar rules and proper sentence structure, etc. Most were not native English speakers. I also volunteered in Schwarzkopf elementary school helping children with learning disabilities learn to read. I have a lot of experience with children at that school since I was a volunteer there the entire time my daughter attended.
Teaching Style
Many children have short attention spans. It's important to keep them engaged. When reading, I challenge their retention skills in a fun way and encourage them to elaborate on the story. This breaks up the task and gives me feedback I need to guage how they are doing. Are retaining the information? Children have different ways of learning. Some are visual, while others are audible. Decide what works best for the child and form a plan that will work for them. If I see they are bored or frustrated, I will take a time out to chat about something they like. It is important that each child feels important and knows they have your full attention and you are genuinely interested in them and helping them achieve their goals.
