Experience Summary
I have worked with children and youth pre-school - 12th grade since 1982. I have done some literacy instruction with adults. I have been recognized as an outstanding mentor to disadvantaged youth. I have written and published articles, and currently am finishing a novel.I have worked one-on-one with autistic children, grades K-5, and am certified in exceptional education and elementary K-6 in Florida. I have worked in Alachua County public schools since 2007 as a substitute teacher and aide, and have spent many hours one-on-one with children (K-5) needing extra support and assistance. I am experienced adapting strategies for learners along the sprecturm of gifted. I am currently contracted with After School Programs, Inc. as a tutor to four children and can offer parent recommendations.
Teaching Style
First,I show my students I deeply care how they feel about learning. I help them identify their blocks to learning and success and help put them at ease. I know how to adapt my style to the particular age I am working with. I am very patient. I know proven strategies to help students master basic skills and more complex skills, using their style of learning. I will recognize pretty early on their zone of mastery, and capacity to cope, so they don't get too frustrated or too bored. I will use whatever modality I can find (creatively and safely) to help bring understanding. I am a cheerleader and am excited when students gain mastery of a topic that at first seemed overwhelming.
