Experience Summary
I have ten years of experience working with all ages of children in an educational setting, including children with special needs. While I am most comfortable with mathematics and language arts, I am qualified to teach all core subject areas. I began my teaching career with a student teaching position in a seventh grade math class. I later became an eighth grade algebra and reading teacher. I also taught pre-k and kindergarten for several years. In addition to holding a Masters of Education in elementary education, I also have a B.A. in mathematics and economics with a minor in British literature. I have certifications in elementary education and Montessori early childhood education.
Teaching Style
I believe children construct their own knowledge of the world around them. They need to be active participants in their educational process rather than passive recipients. I also believe that learning must be engaging, meaningful, and fun. All children are individuals with their own unique learning styles and developmental patterns. I know that what works for one child may not work for another child, and I generally try multiple approaches until I find the one that works. Most importantly, I believe that all children are naturally curious beings who want to understand the world around them. All children want to learn, and all children can learn. It is my job to help them figure out how to learn.
