Experience Summary
As a graduate student in English at Virginia Commonwealth University, I work as a writing consultant in the Writing Center. I have been appointed by faculty to support the campus community through one-on-one consultations aimed at helping students and staff to develop ideas, to organize writing, to revise for clarity and depth and to correct errors made in writing across various levels and disciplines. I work with students in a range of subjects, including lab reports, resumes and college application essays. I have an understanding of papers outside my immediate field, such as psychology, sociology and business writing. The Writing Center serves many international and English-learning students; I am fluent in Spanish.
Teaching Style
At its most basic core, education is the medium through which people may challenge themselves to think critically in new, creative ways so that they may develop better analytical and problem-solving skills. Learning is a process of discovery that is largely influenced by the attitude of a student and the approach to learning that is communicated by his or her teacher. I firmly believe that demonstrating enthusiasm, patience, persistence and constructive criticism are necessary for making progress with visible results in tutoring sessions; I strive to speak kindly and plainly, often drawing on analogies to communicate with students.
