Experience Summary
I began tutoring informally about 15 years ago, by helping classmates in my high school algebra, trigonometry and calculus courses. Since, I have gained experience in group & private tutoring settings and have worked with students of all levels of understanding, as well as those with developmental disabilities. While earning my BS, MS and PhD in Mathematics, I worked in other aspects of education- as a teaching assistant and instructor, both at the college level. Currently I am an assistant professor of mathematics and during the school year hold open tutoring hours in the college’s Enrichment Center. I have taught/tutored extensively in mathematics (from middle school topics to college senior level courses) as well as some physics topics.
Teaching Style
With the many different learning styles of students I try to be dynamic in my teaching, to adapt to a particular students’ needs. In tutoring mathematics, I present the material at hand and background concepts in a variety of ways (depending on the situation- analytically, graphically, as a real-world application, etc) and then move onto examples. I firmly believe that mathematics is not a spectator sport- trying out problems on their own allows a student to actively assess their understanding of the material. I maintain a comfortable and supportive learning environment when working with students so that they may truly gain understanding of the material.
