Experience Summary
During my college years, while earning a degree in journalism, I tutored college-level English composition; this is when I first discovered the joy of helping someone learn something and “seeing the light come on” for them.
I have spent the last twenty years of my professional career in not-for-profit work, almost entirely devoted to programs involving mentoring children. I believe that success in academics is the foundation for success in other areas in life for children and young people.
I am a skilled writer and editor, but more importantly, I understand the importance of helping someone find their own skills and gifts; everyone has the potential to shape their own learning style, if given the direction and support to do so.
Teaching Style
We are all individuals and as such will have our own, unique styles of learning. My job as a tutor/mentor/teacher is to uncover that and foster the growth of such.
I am skilled at promoting creativity, creating a fun learning environment, setting achievable goals, and developing a sense of accomplishment in a student. I balance patience with clear expectations; I view a tutoring relationship as a partnership. After assessing the needs and goals of the student, we will work together to form a plan to achieve short-term and long-term goals.
