Experience Summary
As a student in a Multiple Subject teaching credential program, I have developed my passion for teaching into the skills necessary for encouraging student success. As a part of my program, I spent 300 hours in a K/1st grade combination class. In the classroom, I had many responsibilities including: assisting the students with their work; teaching language arts, social science, science and math lessons; and working with small groups of students to improve reading skills. This year I also worked in an after-school program where I lead the kindergarten class where my duties included teaching conventional lessons in math, science, language arts, and science as well as incorporating song, games, and hands-on activities into lessons.
Teaching Style
I love teaching! Seeing a student’s eyes light up, as they first understand a new concept, is very rewarding. I am a very patient and easy-going, yet focused. I take the time to be sure a student truly understands something before we progress. I feel that instruction needs to be tailored to the student. Every student has the potential to achieve if taught in a way that meets his or her needs. Though I am very familiar with the traditional teaching style of direct instruction, I am learning the value of a constructivist approach. A student learns so much more when concepts are relevant to them and when they do the discovering themselves. I am incorporating more discovery-based teaching methods into my skills set.
