Experience Summary
I have master’s degrees in Mathematics and Statistics with related work in Physics and Astronomy. My 20 years in education includes teaching at various colleges and high schools providing instruction in Statistics, Physics, Calculus and College Algebra. One of my more gratifying experiences was as a Learning Center Instructor working one-on-one with students in a wide variety of subjects. More recently, I worked with a middle school girl who had been bored and ranked as mediocre in public school, but was actually a child prodigy in need of more challenging material!
Teaching Style
In my disciplines, the value of understanding totally outweighs rote memorization and learning of “recipes” for solving problems. I believe students understand new concepts in terms of their previous experience and background. I attempt to link previous experience to new experience and promote meaningful learning. I believe the instructor should be like a coach. In education as in athletics, he or she should be regarded as an individual who helps the student realize his or her full potential.
