Experience Summary
I worked as an Instructional Assistant with students in secondary English, History and Algebra I courses. I aided students with learning disabilities who were placed in mainstream academic classrooms and provided one-on-one instruction so they could have a more personalized education experience. I worked with teachers in implementing instruction in the classroom and aided with supervision when students worked in small groups or individually. I have also worked with students who were enrolled in Spanish classes and I taught them study skills on how to remember all the rules that the language involves. In high school I also taught beginning Spanish to elementary school students through the Spanish honor society as an after school program.
Teaching Style
My first goal as an instructor is to get to know the student. English, my content area, is very applicable to students' lives and everyday experiences and knowing the student personally allows me to relate the material to what they already know. I create a scaffold, building up their lived experiences to enable understanding before branching out and expanding their knowledge limits. I begin with the foundations and work my up. It is important for me to get to know the students individually so I can build a working relationship and a level of trust between instructor and student so that learning can take place in a positive environment.
