Experience Summary
The majority of my educational experience was acquired along with my teaching license at Colorado State University. This experience includes practicums in Fort Collins schools and 16 weeks of student teaching at Loveland High School. All 3 stints involved either algebra or geometry. While taking courses for my license, I augmented my math knowledge with classes that included calculus, abstract algebra, and non-Euclidean geometry. I also tutored a visually impaired student in her integrated math classes. I am now applying for my license, which I expect to receive in July. My practical math experience includes over 25 years as an engineer in the integrated circuit industry, including 10 years at Ball Aerospace.
Teaching Style
I believe that education comprises steps from the known to the unknown in directions that cultivates curiosity. Therefore my first steps are to (1) become well acquainted with my students, including learning their interests and assessing their prior knowledge of relevant subjects, and (2) establish mutual respect in the classroom. Another habit to establish early is the need to have fun. I keep high school students cognizant that employment in the world is very competitive. To meet this challenge, they should actively explore their interests, especially with extracurricular activities. My ultimate goal is to inspire students to become self-driven learners because education continues throughout one’s lifetime.
