Experience Summary
My education includes degrees in Biology, Environmental Science, and Education. Some of my coursework included botany, zoology, chemistry, physics, ecology, scientific methods and writing. As an environmental consultant for the past 23 years, I’ve conducted scientific studies, written reports, managed a team, and worked with the public. I've also taught science at the college-level. Two favorite classes were “Spring Flora” and “Trees and Shrubs”. Both were freshman courses that introduced mostly non-science majors to their first experience with the natural sciences. Overall, I'm enthusiastic about teaching and believe that my real-life experience provides a unique learning opportunity.
Teaching Style
I love science and love to teach! I believe that teaching is an intentional effort. It’s not just about presenting information, but also about motivating. I set high standards, but also emphasize that science can be fun. As a tutor, I will provide a positive environment that focuses on what can be done, not on what can’t. My teaching approach is hand-on and my experience as a consultant provides me with a variety of real-life examples of how science is used and applied. Whenever possible, we’ll look beyond the textbook and translate to an application so that information “sticks”. I also emphasize good writing skills and organizational thought.
