Experience Summary
I recently received my Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience from Brandeis University, where I graduated Summa Cum Laude with Highest Honors in Neuroscience. This fall, I will begin a Neuroscience PhD program at Harvard University. I have greatly enjoyed volunteering as a tutor for the past 3 years, providing weekly assistance in High School level math or biology. Over the course of this time, I worked with 3 different students. The experience I have gained has provided me with an appreciation of the many subtleties associated with the sources of motivation and/or difficulty affecting classroom learning. I get a great sense of fulfillment from tutoring and look forward to the opportunity to continue before heading to grad school.
Teaching Style
As a tutor, I strive to help the student stay up to date in the subject matter, improve his or her understanding of the fundamentals, and achieve a strong level of confidence with the material. This requires integrating frequent question asking into my demonstrations. Separate topics within either science or math can often be linked conceptually, allowing me to review current material with a student while still breaking it down in a way that addresses his or her needs. I believe that the blend of demonstrating and questioning I use helps the material sink in effectively, prepares the student for unexpected challenges, and allows me to get a continual feel for areas in which he or she still needs assistance.
