Experience Summary
I graduated Brandeis with degrees in Psych. & Engl./Amer. Lit, with a Sec. Ed. minor; I also was a TA for a humanities course as a senior. Though I was certified in Engl. in MA & taught 1.5 yrs. there, I also was a private instructor. From 2002-2009, I tutored mainly SAT prep, but also chemistry, biology, & math from 6th-Calc. III. From 2005-6, I attended UNCA and completed a Pure Math degree, also working in their Math lab as a tutor. From 2006 on I have taught HS Math in NC, teaching Tech Math I/II, Alg. I, Discrete & Career Math. I worked very closely with the Spec. Ed. Dept., & have an extensive knowledge of IEPs. I am now dual certified in Engl. & Math in NC.
Teaching Style
I have worked with a large spectrum of skill levels & motivations, & have developed skills to meet all levels. I have extensive experience working with learning disabled children, & many of my strategies are geared to diverse learners. I have mainly tutored upper level/motivated students, but I try to fuse my methods together. I discuss problem solving techniques, word problem approaches, patterns, non-calculator skills, & vocab in order to promote self-confidence and understanding of their weaknesses/strengths. I encourage them to ask questions, interrupt for clarification, & to feel comfortable with me. I am known amongst peers as having excellent rapport with students of all social groups, and being respected by them, not just liked.
