Experience Summary
I earned a teaching degree in Secondary Education in the social studies subject area, after studying at Warner Pacific College in Portland, Oregon. I have worked for ten years in education, with students as young as infants up to high school seniors, and all in between. For the past six years I have worked with ELL (english as a second language) students on the Navajo reservation and on the Mexican border at Nogales, Arizona. I have worked to bring up the reading level of these students in my social studies classes. I have great knowledge in my subject area, social studies, and the skills and patience it takes to tutor students in all levels of english reading and writing.
Teaching Style
I believe it is my duty as a teacher and responsibility as a human being to inspire all students to keep trying, access their potential, and envision themselves as successful on their own terms. I asses the student's current reading and writing levels and then use scaffolding methods to bring that level up. I encourage student ownership of the work that they are trying to accomplish and let their interest in the subject be their driving force for achievement. I help them develop their critical thinking skills in order to find an answer or come to an understanding of the material.
