Experience Summary
I have been teaching in the area of communication disorders for 19 years. Many students are slow and labored readers, due to the fact that they do not "hear" and process sounds or phonics as well as others. I recently learned that dyslexia has many of the same characteristics as those seen in students who are hard-of-hearing, so I attended a workshop to learn the Wilson method of teaching students who are dyslexic. Teaching in both areas requires seeing reading in a different way. If your child has difficulty reading, can't decode words, or seems to have become discouraged with reading and given up, they may need a "different" approach!
Teaching Style
I have been teaching in public school for 19 years. I have worked with children from prekindergarten through fifth grade. I believe that all children can succeed if given the right tools. Sometimes giving students small goals that they can achieve will give them the self-esteem that they have been lacking in order to reach the final goal.
