Experience Summary
As a PhD student in English at Brown University, I have been both a committed scholar and dedicated instructor. My teaching experience includes composition courses at Brown, literature classes, summer teaching for high school students (with an emphasis on the AP and SAT exams) and three years of working at Brown's Writing Center. I would be a good fit for any middle or high school students looking to improve their writing and preparing for college-level work; I can also provide strategies for improving scores on college entrance exams.
Teaching Style
Writing is a difficult skill and practice. I do not believe that anyone is born a great writer; it is something that is taught. At the same time, not everyone aspires to be a "great writer." Many students simply want to achieve a good mark on their college papers in order to go on and become doctors or engineers, etc. This is why a discussion of objectives is important: what do you want to gain from this experience? What do you want to achieve? I feel confident in saying that I can offer students positive results because I understand what will be required of them on the college level.
