Experience Summary
As a lead teacher for a Ace It! Tutoring and an Instructional Aide for Disabled Students Programs and Services at Reedley College, I've had considerable experience working with students in K-12 and with students with disabilities at the community college level. I've tutored reading at the K-12 level, and I've worked with students at the community college level on subjects such as grammar, sentence structure, thesis statements, and writing essays and reports. I've also tutored mathematics, including pre-algrebra, algebra, and geometry, and I've tutored these subjects across a full range of grades. In addition to these areas, I've also tutoring students in Accounting, Child Development classes, Geography, and Office Technology classes.
Teaching Style
During my time as a tutor I've learned a variety of teaching styles. I've worked with kindergartners and employed an animated, high energy style to capture their attention and keep them motivated. For older students I use a type of Socratic method where instead of answering questions for them, I work with students by requiring them to answer questions so they can lead themselves to the right answer. I feel this method not only allows a student to develop confidence, it teaches them to rely on their own processes to develop answers. In addition to that method, I use traditional tutoring methods that involve discussing topics, developing strategies for remembering material, and identifying learning methods that work best for each student.
