Experience Summary
After graduating cum laude from the University of Oregon with a B.A. in English, I earned an M.A. in the Teaching of English from Stanford University along with a Single Subject Credential in English/Language Arts. I have taught English at the middle and high school level at high-achieving public schools in various parts of the Bay Area. I am particularly skilled at teaching students to construct persuasive, expository, and analytical essays, and at teaching students the fundamentals of grammar, mechanics, and usage. I am also available to assist in preparing for standardized tests such as the CAHSEE and the SAT.
Teaching Style
I believe that every student has a unique learning style and that it is my job as a teacher or tutor to discover which instructional methods work best for each particular student. I have a naturally patient and supportive demeanor and work hard to build rapport with students so that they will feel comfortable engaging in the risk-taking that is necessary for learning to take place. I emphasize the teaching of reading and writing strategies that students can take with them and use in future assignments, which helps to increase students' feelings of confidence as readers and writers.
