Experience Summary
Individualizing English grammar, composition, and lit. instruction became a teaching strength during 12 years in secondary schools. Skills for ELLs were honed by nine years at a Japanese university. I tutored adults in my “Have English-Will Travel” company serving personal/business needs of Silicon Valley firms’ foreign nationals. Effectiveness with L1 and L2 speakers is augmented by detailed assessment and diagnosis of skills, with personalized remediation for desired proficiencies. Living in three cultures and specializing in Intercultural Communication enables connection with a variety of students. Publications reflect funded investigation of language minority students’ academic progress and well-being in Japanese public schools.
Teaching Style
I love learning, and try to impart its joy to all I encounter. Much of that joy is realized by my students in developing and mastering needed and wanted skills. It is a further delight to me that so many of my students do “turn on” admirably as they realize progress in academic spheres they previously found discouragingly challenging. The variety of approaches I have mastered in presenting materials and individualizing practice makes my service as a learning guide perfect for the previously-frustrated student. I love learning, and I never give up on anyone!
