Experience Summary
I have a very diverse teaching and writing background in educational and professional settings, including both English and journalism. In addition to working as a writer and editor, I have taught young people K-college in a variety of public and private settings for more than 15 years. I hold B.A. and M.A. degrees in English/Mass Communications. As a teacher and writer/editor, I work with many people from diverse backgrounds, which has given me the ability to meet my students "where they are" in terms of their communications skills and to gently lead them to excellence in the use of standard English for academic and professional success.
Teaching Style
I believe that nothing can replace personal interaction in improving writing skills. In my classrooms, I utilize peer groups and personal interaction to make clear the connections between writer and reader. I take a non-judgemental approach to dealing with the shortcomings each writer brings to communication and work very hard to personalize the importance of effective writing skills for success at any academic level. When I tutor or work one-to-one with a student or mature writer, I try to balance respect for the writer's personal voice and perspective with the demands of excellence in written communication.
