Experience Summary
I have been very successful throughout school. I'm a Presidential Scholar, Toyota Scholar, Gordon B. Hinckley Scholar, and a Chicago Tribune Scholar. I've taken a wide variety of courses at the college level and have been on the Dean's List every semester. I'm very qualified to tutor most subjects up to the college level, as well as some college level subjects. My BA is in philosophy, but I've taken one or more semesters of music, chemistry, physics, biology, computer science, history, linguistics, Russian, Chinese, economics, political science, Spanish, and anthropology.
Over the past few years I've taught cello and piano lessons, logic, metalogic, and English to elementary, high school, and college students.
Teaching Style
My most important quality for tutoring is a passion for education. I believe that good learning is based in appreciating the value of the subject matter, and when I teach I strive to make the material relevant to the student. Even students with great willpower do not learn very effectively when they are not interested in the material.
I also teach with analogies and comparisons. People learn best by seeing similarities and differences between new concepts and concepts they are familiar with. Even the most difficult concepts can become clear when illuminated by good analogies and comparisons. Many students do not realize that they are just as capable as other students but need to approach the subject from a different angle.
