Experience Summary
My interest in education started in childhood from my parents, both of whom were teachers. Throughout my own schooling I excelled in Language Arts and Mathematics.
I obtained a BA in Psychology in 1983 and found that I preferred to work in teaching. My Master’s degree from Northeastern Univ. was completed with a 4.0 grade average. I continue to take graduate courses through the Univ. of Lowell in MA.
I have tutored typical children, children with learning disabilities, those who experience difficulties in the elementary years, students with severe disabilities and adults learning English as a Second Language. Teaching effective study skills and academic organization is a particular specialty of mine.
Teaching Style
When I first meet students I informally assess their learning style. I begin at the level of the student and devise lessons and strategies to help the student reach learning goals.
I concentrate on potential rather than focus on shortcomings. I create lessons and strategies until the student has met set goals. I do this with optimism and encouragement.
When tutoring, I set limits yet teach with humor and patience. I strive to provide a positive learning experience vs. one that is overwhelming with mistakes. I do not impose a particular philosophy or package; I teach within the learner’s curriculum and adapt my teaching style as needed.
I have worked with students in school, home and community settings.
