Experience Summary
I began my study of American Sign Language (ASL) at the tender age of 12, then studied Latin in high school with Mrs. Ellen Conrad. When I reached college, I continued my study of ASL while tutoring friends in Latin. I have studied Arabic and Irish Gaelic at the college level, and dabbled in Spanish, Hawaiian Creole, and various African languages. In addition to learning, I love to teach. I began teaching ASL while I was still a high school student, and continue tutoring friends in ASL and Latin. As a college student, I began teaching and coaching fencing to all age groups, but specifically students in grades 6-12.
Teaching Style
My favorite aspect of coaching, teaching, and tutoring is the personal connection I build with my students. As a student, I did not adapt well to traditional educational settings, and so I seek to create a nontraditional environment for my students that involves kinetic, visual, and auditory stimulation. Finding my student's motivation to learn is key to my success as a teacher. I strive to make each learning experience new and meaningful. However, perfect practice makes perfect, and repetition is an important aspect of turning new material into "old hat."
