Experience Summary
I have a bachelor degree in linguistics, which is the study of the structures and patterns of language. I am currently working on my Masters in Teaching English as a Second Language. I have three and a half years of experience as a tutor. I worked in the Center for Writing at the University of Minnesota where I tutored more than 350 students in all stages of the writing process. I have worked for the last year as a tutor for ESL students at Normandale Community College. I have also taught three sections of Introduction to College for ESL students and an intermediate grammar/writing course. I have a deep understanding of the writing process and what is expected of writing at the academic level.
Teaching Style
I love tutoring because it allows me to collaborate with the learner exactly at the level and in the subject matter they need. The one-on-one method allows me to tailor the materials to the learner's styles. I am a big advocate of teaching the learner strategies that they can take with them and apply to future coursework. For me, the student who says, "I'm a bad writer," or, "I can't write" is a wonderful challenge. After learning the process and focusing on what they can do, my goal is for everyone to take pride in their writing.
