Experience Summary
My experience in the educational field is more varied than my resume indicates. What is not indicated is that during my years as an elementary level teacher (K-8), it was not uncommon for me to tutor one of my present or former students, in math, English, and using the computer as a reference. As an ESL teacher, once again I have found myself working one-on-one with students outside of normal classroom hours, and can state that tutoring students one at a time is a true pleasure.
Teaching Style
I have worked with children and adults in a dozen venues over the last 20 years. With experience, I have become much more Socratic in my method. I endeavor to minimize my presence, thereby allowing the students an arena for true exploration and discovery. My role is to provide a setting where the goal of input is to maintain the student's forward motion. This is accomplished by questions, minimal corrections, and questioning the thought behind student action, so that he/she has an opportunity to use critical thinking skills to self-correct. It is my goal that every student will not just go through motions to get the answers 'right' but have an understanding of the learning process that will last his/her lifetime.
