Experience Summary
Although my primary academic interests are languages and literatures, I have also enjoyed studying in many other academic fields. When an undergraduate, I intended to become an engineer; as a result I studied quite a lot of math and science (which later proved useful, enabling me to manage NASA grants for a university engineering school). Still, the liberal arts are my favorites; and I've found that as a educator (I've taught university, high school and middle school classes) I am most passionate and effective when teaching languages, literature, history, European art. Still, as a math or science teacher, I can be pretty convincing.
Teaching Style
I have always worked to make a difference in the life of each of my students. I love teaching and working with young people.
Although most of my student evaluations state that I have high classroom standards and expectations, they also observe that I genuinely care about students as individuals. I guess that I'm that kind of teacher whom students call up a few years later to report a 'success' or just to chat.
I figure that it is my job as a teacher to figure out how to individualize instruction, to offer the subject material in such a way that the student eventually takes the initiative and, says, "here, Mr. S, let me show you".
