Experience Summary
I have served as a Writing Tutor with UVU for five years now, tutoring in all genres. In April I will graduate with my BS in English and Creative Writing. I worked as a tutor of writing at Austin Community College in TX from 1/07-12/07. Currently I serve as a TA for an Intro to Creative Writing class at UVU in which I grade half of student work and teach once a month. I was accepted to the University of Houston's MFA program this fall, where I will also teach undergraduate composition. I served as Editor-in-Chief of UVU's literary magazine entitle, Touchstones. I have presented my creative writing at several forums like the Pop Culture Conference last year, held in New Orleans. I have ambition as both a writer and as a teacher of writing.
Teaching Style
I want to help those who may not otherwise speak, vocalize their own narratives and cultural idiosyncrasies through discovery of literature and language.
Empathy, which is vital to tutoring, is as vital, if not more, to teaching. I not only do my best to usher students gently through the writing process, I shut up and listen to their stories. To see a student light up at that moment of realization when they finally understand a concept, or to watch their fear for English melt just a little bit, is, for me, an immeasurable honor.
I like making people laugh, and I like when students feel I am there as not only a gentle voice of authority, but as a friend, too.
