Experience Summary
Having just graduated last year (May, '09) from Tufts University with a Bachelor's degree in music, I have an extensive, solid knowledge of both music theory and music history. Also, as a piano player myself, I spent my last year at Tufts working with the Community Music Program, giving piano lessons to classes of children ranging in age from 4 to 13. Additionally, after graduating, I successfully completed the MTEL (Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure) exam in Music. Having spent a year living in France in high school and a summer during college, I am very comfortable with both French conversational, writing, and grammar skills.
Teaching Style
Although I believe in some degree of structure, I am very flexible in my teaching style. Every student is different - I work with each one individually to determine their goals and then develop an appropriate, unique program. Children learn best by actively participating in the material. I try to engage them as much as possible, whether it be with a lively discussion about music history, practicing and performing a piece of music until we are both satisfied with the result, or hearing and speaking French instead of simply memorizing the grammatical rules of the language.
