Experience Summary
I am a life-long learner with degrees in Zoology & Philosophy, and I was the Valedictorian of my high school. I have 17 years of experience in the IT industry, mostly as a Technical Writer. I have taught in public school (Science for 6th-12th grades), I have tutored in the subjects of reading, writing, math, and science, and I have taught as a substitute in various subjects. I also have a great deal of volunteer experience with children: mentoring an 8-year-old boy for Big Brothers/Big Sisters, working with disabled children in a therapeutic horseback riding program, teaching horseback riding lessons to kids, volunteering for a children's shelter, and teaching an after-school program to 3rd-6th graders about pet-related subjects.
Teaching Style
I love working with young people and sharing my knowledge and love of learning with them. I enjoy learning from them and hearing about their ideas, interests, and abilities. I find it easy to connect with students and quickly build a rapport with them.
I am extremely patient, and it is very rare that I feel any sense of frustration when working with kids. I am able to explain difficult concepts in simple terms and in various ways.
I feel that feedback to students should be positive & constructive. I do not use sarcasm, intimidation, or ridicule. I strive to prevent children from feeling embarrassment for any difficulties they are having. I enjoy helping students to experience success, make new discoveries, and gain new skills!
