Experience Summary
During my career as a researcher in the field of software engineering, my work depended on mathematical thinking. I have spent considerable energy, from my time working toward my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in engineering and through my subsequent career, communicating ideas through writing, lecturing, tutoring, and creating and teaching courses. Watching my own children going through high school has motivated me for the past six years to focus my attention on teaching and tutoring, concentrating on math.
Teaching Style
I enjoy teaching young adults, watching "the light bulb go off" as they come to understand concepts that had been eluding them. Math is a subject that centers around understanding and applying a surprisingly modest number of concepts. As such, I focus on the concepts and their relationships, preferring to look at the concepts through varying problems from various domains, rather than through repetitive drill. Learning how to think logically and methodically is an essential skill I look to pass on to my students.
