Experience Summary
I am a chemical engineer and I currently work for a biofuels plant. I consider myself as having a good way of presenting the science behind biodiesel to the other employees who do not have a scientific background. As such, I often have to create spreadsheets and conduct training sessions to explain the mathematics behind the process in layman’s terms.
I have tutored students in chemistry, algebra, Latin and geometry. I tutored for underprivileged children in NYC for a few months in mathematics, and in college I tutored chemistry in my sorority and for other students upon request. I tutored a student from the Bronx area whose grades in algebra improved. One year ago I tutored Latin for a student for a couple of months.
Teaching Style
I like to break every concept and principle down into its most basic components. An artist breaks down a drawing into its basic shapes, and is able to create what may at first seem like a complex object to draw. Explaining mathematical principles is almost as difficult as learning them, but it doesn’t have to be that way.
Teaching in groups and teaching individually both have their advantages and disadvantages. Teaching one-on-one allows the student to have individual attention, while teaching in groups allows more flexibility and allows students to learn concepts from each other. I consider myself able to do both, but one-on-one often works best.
