Experience Summary
As a recent UNC-Chapel Hill graduate with majors in journalism, dramatic art, and creative writing, I have extensive experience in arts education, academic outreach, and childcare that help make me an outstanding tutor. I have worked with a wide-range of students in elementary, middle, and high schools, including academically gifted students, Hispanic immigrants, and autistic children. Most recently I taught creative writing and theatre at an arts camp for 10–17-year-olds, and oversaw the bunks for 10–12-year-old boys. I am also a part-time babysitter and have volunteered for Mission/St. Joseph’s Pediatric Outpatient Center and Big Brothers/Big Sisters of WNC. Currently I work as a childcare provider at a local YWCA.
Teaching Style
I utilize a wide-range of teaching styles in order to adapt to each student’s specific needs and abilities. I believe the key to learning is asking questions, and thus encourage students to use discourse and debate as their greatest academic assets. In addition to my educational experience, I have other skills, passions, and interests that make me excited to work with children. As an artist, my primary interests lie in theatre, writing, and storytelling, and thus the ideas of imagination, personal growth, and creativity – so essential to a student’s mind – are inherently intertwined with who I am as a person. As an arts educator, I would thus hope to incorporate these qualities into my role as tutor.
