Experience Summary
As a graduate assistant at Northern Illinois University, I taught composition, primarily using popular culture as a topic for expository writing and developing critical thinking skills and techniques. I have also served as a substitute teacher in the Rockford Public Schools in several subject areas. Most recently, I spent five+ years as the Communications Editor for a global manufacturing company, where I was responsible for all sales literature and communication in the North American market. Having tired of the office environment and its distractions, I was fortunate enough to be able to resign this position and now offer my services on a freelance basis, which allows me to focus solely on what I enjoy in my work.
Teaching Style
I believe that learning occurs through doing, particularly when it comes to writing. Students become better writers by putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard). There are obviously techniques to be taught and encouraged, but individual discovery is key. As a tutor, I believe that it is my responsibility to serve as a guide, keeping learners on track and pointing out opportunities for getting closer to the ideal.
