Experience Summary
As an undergraduate student, I became a substitute teacher for Fulton County Schools and taught in this capacity for four years K-12, focusing on primary grades. Prior to that I taught in adult private, health related programs for another four years. Since 2000, I have taught high school and undergraduate students in the subjects of wellness education and English (as a second language, writing, and reading).
Teaching Style
My teaching style is holistic, relying upon the philosophy of Dr. Parker J. Palmer who attempts simultaneously to maintain humility, keep the focus less on himself and the students, and more on the subject. With the subject at the center of the room, I prepare myself beforehand to fan the flames of interest as needed to keep the students engaged. This works by first encouraging students to focus on themselves and using their own experience or questions as the best approach to the subject. I tend to ask shy students questions that invite them to express themselves. In this way I believe each student has an opportunity to participate, learn and grow.
