Experience Summary
As the first in my family to earn a university degree, I have a strong connection with students of all ages who need educational support. I have more than 20 years of experience teaching English and writing to a diverse range of learners from middle school and high school to PhD research students. While working full-time, I have earned a BS in English Education, MA in English/Non-fiction Writing, and a PhD in English/Writing so I understand the demands students must juggle as they try to educate themselves. I have also worked as a free-lance writer and editor and have published articles, stories, and poetry.
Teaching Style
I am a patient, student-centered facilitator of critical thinking and writing skills. With specific training in writing pedagogy, I see the best results in small groups or with individuals when the process of writing can be explored through creative catalysts designed around the specific interests and strengths of each student. Once students understand that they can learn the skills needed to express their ideas through the process of writing (the discovery of ideas through drafting, focusing, revision, and editing), I usually see tremendous improvement in their writing assignments.
