Experience Summary
I have many years of experience tutoring and counseling students at all grade levels ( K-12). I have tutored in community-based programs as well as many years with the Los Angeles Unified School District. I have worked with a variety of students from many diverse backgrounds. I am able to communicate in Spanish at a conversational level and can read and understand written Spanish at an intermediate level. I have tutored first year Algebra, statistics, basic math, English literature, grammar, reading, spelling and other basic skills as well as other college level social science courses. I can also assist students in writing essays, reports, formal letters, technical reports, applications and other formal and informal styles of writing.
Teaching Style
I have dedicated my professional life to helping students and young people achieve their potential. In my experience, often times a student’s ability to learn is tied in with their trust of and rapport with the person teaching them. I feel it is important to allow the student to go at his or her “own pace” and not create a frustrating environment where they may feel too pressured. Although the parents may feel frustrated at this point, it is helpful to get their support and encouragement during the tutoring process. So, ideally, it is important to first create a good learning environment followed by a clear understanding of the subject problem areas (establishing a “baseline”) and then setting up a plan for overcoming those problem areas.
