Experience Summary
I attended Cardiff University where I majored in English studies and Linguistics and have been teaching courses in linguistics, language development and grammar at the college level for 15 years. I currently teach in a speech pathology department and am familiar with communication disorders that lead to literacy and learning problems. I have published widely. I have also mentored and tutored students who are having problems with their writing and literacy skills.
I have become interested in tutoring and preparing both high school students, adults returning to education and younger children to gain better skills in English and literacy. I am looking for summer teaching and part-time tutoring during regular semesters.
Teaching Style
The key to good teaching is adaptability. First and foremost I believe that every individual can learn but we all have different learning styles. Some individuals may learn better using visual learning, others process information better from aural input. I believe in both problem-based learning using hands-on application but also realize that skills such as reading and literacy require some more traditional methods such as phonics approaches to reading. I always start tutoring a student by carrying out a diagnostic approach, that is, finding out their strengths, interests, and learning style. I love teaching and bringing out the best in my students, education is the key to their future.
