Experience Summary
My experience stems primarily from my time attending college both in the United States and abroad in Cork, Ireland. I have earned a B.A. in English with the intent of pursuing graduate school. In May 2008 I was awarded the honor of an Award of Excellence in Critical Writing from the University of Northern Iowa. I spent three consecutive summers as a faculty member with Exploration Schools, Inc. located in Boston, MA where I taught, coached, tutored and led youth ranging in grades 4-9 in the areas. In addition, during the four years I attended U.N.I. I worked as a volunteer teacher and as an independent tutor.
Teaching Style
My teaching style highlights each student's strengths in the particular area in need of tutoring. By doing this, the student gains confidence in the material more and more by knowing that while they may struggle in part in a certain area, there are also multiple areas of strength to focus on to increase academic confidence. Some students need more of an independent approach to learning with the opportunity to verbalize their thought process and questions in a safe environment not always offered in a classroom setting. There is no reason any child should fall behind due to simply needing information explained differently or in a quieter setting more conducive to one-on-one active learning.
