Experience Summary
During the fall of 2008, I worked for the USF Honors College as a tutor for the Jenkins Scholars Program on campus. I was responsible for the academic progress of a student throughout the semester in her main classes. I served as an outlet of moral and social support as well, aiding her in decisions regarding career choices, acting in the role of mentor. I relayed methods of stress relief, time management, test anxiety, and various strategies to overcome the freshman experience. I assisted this student as well as others in finding other mentors. I expanded upon this experience by tutoring other students in mathematics, particularly for college entrance exams.
Teaching Style
One of the styles I used and obtained from this experience is the relaying and thoroughly explaining information to others in a one-on-one situation. I learned to evaluate learning styles and to adjust information for it to be best understood, and retained. As there are many solutions to a math problem, there are many ways to relay it, and my goal will be to figure the most efficient solbing strategy for each student. The communication strengths I have practiced from tutoring will aid me in future student interactions as well.
