Experience Summary
I have worked with children the entirety of my career (20+ years) in some fashion or the other. They have been my passion and my calling in life. I have been a foster parent to teens, have been a therapist and case manager for children and have positively interfaced with public schools in advocating for the educational resources needed for students. I have tutored children in academic work (albeit informally and inconsistently) across my entire career.
Teaching Style
I believe in teaching study skills as well as offering general direction & encouragement. I believe that students must do their own work rather than being “spoon fed”. Preparing is important as this leaves the tutor free to engage with the student.
Study space must meet the individual needs of the student. An agreed upon study plan helps to keep both student and tutor on track. Routine is crucial and appreciated by students. I work to find ways of helping a child internalize the value of learning ... “life-long” education is as much of an attitude as a process. It is as important to encourage effort as praising the end product. Children need to take personal pride in “doing the best that THEY can do.”
