Experience Summary
As a graduate student in anthropology, I have served as a Teaching Assistant for 8 semesters. This has involved designing lesson plans and teaching smaller recitations/classes which accompany large anthropology lecture courses. Since homework assignments often involve essays, I have gained experience in teaching the mechanics of college-level essay writing, including essay brainstorming, organization, and grammar. In addition, I have developed strong skills in speaking, reading, and writing Spanish. Since college, I have traveled to Mexico for 6 summers where Spanish-speaking was essential in order to converse and collaborate with Mexican colleagues.
Teaching Style
Theorists such as David Kolb argue that learning styles vary among students. Some individuals, for example, tend to learn more readily through observation, while others process new information more effectively through hands-on experimentation. From my own teaching experiences, I have found these principles to be true. As a result, I firmly believe that it is important to tailor my teaching to the needs of each student. I teach with patience and encourage inquisitiveness, as it is my goal to positively affect students’ lives.
