Experience Summary
I have earned both a MA and a BS in Urban and Regional Studies from Minnesota State University. I spent 15 years working in local government management. Throughout my career, I have taken opportunities to hire and mentor graduate student interns. Several of these interns have gone on to successful careers in local government management and planning. Recently, I was accepted into the Educator Preparation Institute at St Johns River Community College. This semester, I am taking four classes, including Classroom Management, Instructional Strategies, Teaching and Learning Process, and Technology. I have received a passing score on the 6-12 Social Studies exam. Upon completion of the EPI program, I plan to teach high school social studies.
Teaching Style
I believe that an instructor’s primary role is to create an environment that encourages a real desire to learn by presenting the subject matter in a way that is interesting to the student and by striving to make it make it relevant to their lives. It is my role as an instructor to take abstract concepts and breathe life into them and make them real to the student. I think that it is important to understand and be constantly aware that different people learn in different ways. Because of this, I feel that it is important that an instructor uses a wide range of teaching methods in order to give each student the best opportunity to learn and understand the material.
