Experience Summary
As a double-major in English and Religious Studies at Rollins College, I know how to read, write, and analyze effectively. I graduated with Honors in the English major due to the senior thesis I wrote, in which I conducted independent research and synthesized my research into an original argument. I also have tangible tutoring experience. From June to July 2008, I worked as a tutor for the Upward Bound program, which helps disadvantaged high school students prepare for college. From August 2008 to May 2009, I worked as a Peer Writing Consultant at the Rollins Writing Center, where, in one-on-one appointments, I helped my fellow students improve their writing, covering everything from grammar to structure.
Teaching Style
My philosophy is to encourage and listen to students, and while giving them clear direction and guidance, to also strive to teach them to learn how to write on their own. The goal of the Rollins Writing Center was to create better writers, not better papers, and my teaching style follows that thinking. I listen to students and ask them questions, giving them concrete examples when needed. I provide them with strategies for better analysis and writing, but also encourage them to think originally and to develop their own ideas, since I believe it is important for students to learn to think and write independently, rather than just blindly follow directions.
